To Wear or Not To Wear...Masks

Lindsay O'Connor and

Many schools, businesses, sporting events, and social gatherings are requiring people to wear masks. The facts about wearing masks may seem unclear in many ways including its effectiveness and purpose. Research has been conducted to help individuals evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of mask-wearing. The facts can help you make an educated choice.

Many studies have found that masks greatly impact the spread of Covid-19, and increase the safety of the
population. For instance, stated researchers have predicted that 80 percent of the population wearing masks would do more to reduce Covid-19 spread than a strict lockdown. Furthermore, a study performed by Health Affairs found that wearing a mask leads to a decrease in a daily Covid-19 growth rate. How do masks help?

While speaking thousands of respiratory droplets escape from your mouth, and those droplets can easily spread from one person to another; spreading Covid-19. Whenever a mask is worn the number of respiratory drops emitted into the air is significantly reduced. This is pretty straight forward, but it is always important to look at both sides of every situation.

Mask also included disadvantages. For instance, children under the age of two and people with
respiratory problems are recommended to not wear masks. The CA Department of Public Health wrote,
“ Wearing a mask may actually be harmful to some people with heart or lung disease because it can make the lungs work harder to breathe. ” The CA Department of Public Health also stated that “Surgical masks that trap small particles are designed to filter the air coming out of the wearer’s mouth and do not provide a good seal to prevent inhalation of small particles or gases in smoke.” This means that surgical masks don’t filter the air you breathe back in and don’t protect you from inhaling any harmful particles in the air.

To protect yourself and others it is important to consider the facts about mask-wearing. Make careful decisions about your mask-wearing habits and examine both pros and cons of wearing a mask. Remember that not everyone can wear a mask due to health conditions. Be kind to others whether or not they are wearing a mask, because you never know the reason behind their actions. Always be aware that the
decisions you make can affect you and others.
